More and more people are regularly using wearable fitness devices such as fitbits to track their daily activity and for the most part they are brilliant, but they can also cause people to run into problems with calorie intake/output.
I'm often asked by clients if the calorie burn recorded via the device can be used to increase their calorie intake and the answer is always, no.
Here's why:
- Most trackers are inaccurate when it comes to calculating calorie expenditure, with some studies suggesting that the margin of error was as high as 93% in some devices.
- The formula I've used to calculate my clients deficit already accounts for their activity levels. â € This post isn't meant to bash wearable fitness devices, as I'm a big fan and encourage all my clients to use them to measure steps, HR and encourage daily activity... Just take the calorie burn with a pinch of salt.
