Running, as with any other form of training needs to be progressive in order for you to continue seeing results.
If you just continually run the same 4-mile loop at a pace that never really challenges you, you’ll quickly adapt and your level of fitness and weight loss will soon plateau.
Here’s how that works: Your body is essentially a machine that just wants to carry out its daily tasks as efficiently as possible.
As your body begins to adapt to your new running regime it will become more efficient and start needing fewer calories to complete your usual 4-mile loop than it did before.
Add weight loss to this equation and now you will be more efficient, carrying around less weight on your 4-mile loop, as well as decreasing your basal metabolic rate (the energy your body burns at rest) due to carrying less mass (fat) and potentially muscle* if you’re not combining your runs with strength training.
*Increased muscle mass not only makes you look, feel and perform better, but it also requires more energy than fat for your body to maintain.
