Start With Why

Over the past 14 years working in the fitness industry I have met and worked with hundreds of people looking to improve their health, physique and performance through diet, lifestyle and exercise.

During every consultation I will always ask why that person trains, or what they hope to achieve from training and more often than not the response will be “I want to lose ‘x’ amount of weight” and it’s at this point that I’ll challenge that person to find a deeper motivation, a true inspiration behind why they really want to train, instead of an arbitrary goal. I want to know what really inspires them to seek my help.

In Simon Sinek’s book ’Start With Why’ he describes what he calls the Golden Circle (or in my case the glowing pink circle).

The Golden Circle is made up of three circles: Why in the centre, How is the middle , and What on the outside.

Most people think or talk from the outside in.  We talk about what we do and how we do it, but it is not until we describe why we do it that it inspires action.  When we reverse the order of the information, we tend to have a very different response.

We all know WHAT we do (training, dieting etc.)

Some of us even know HOW (effective programming, calorie counting etc.) but very few of us identify why we truly do these things, we just do them without linking it to our highest values.

I've identified my why, therefore it’s easy for me to live an inspired life, it’s easy for me to do tasks that seem mundane and boring to some, because I’m able to link these tasks back to my why, my purpose.

My why is to be an example for my daughter and an inspiration for dads across the world. My why is to help, support and inspire dads to want to change their lives for the better, so that no family will go through the pain that my family went/goes through of losing a dad before his time.

What's your why?
