How To Achieve Your Goals

Updated: Dec 23, 2020

Setting goals, without knowing how to achieve goals is worthless. Set yourself up for success by following these tips.

Link your goals to your highest values - Before you can link your goals to what you value most, you must identify what you value most, for me personally I value my family, fitness and business above all else. During times when I can't rely on motivation alone to complete a task, I'll link it back to my family, I'll ask myself "how will completing this task benefit my family" and then I'll make a list of reasons why completing this task will actually benefit my family. When you take the time to link tasks back to your highest values you will become inspired to complete tasks that otherwise might seem painful, boring and mundane.

Visualise reaching your goal - Visualisation is a powerful tool, that you can use to create a strong mental image of future events or your future self. With the use of visualisation, you can decide what you want, then walk through the steps you need to take in order to reach your goal, you can even get a sense of what it would feel like to reach your goal. By practising this consistently you'll boost your self-confidence, align your purpose and values with your daily actions and your vision will become stronger and the likelihood of you achieving your goal will increase.

Don't keep your goals to yourself - Accountability is a key driver for achieving any goal, for me as a personal trainer, my client's goals are my goals and it's my job to make sure they're held accountable, but you don't necessarily need a personal trainer to hold you accountable. You could find a friend or family member to share your list of goals with, the simple act of sharing your goals with somebody else will increase your chances of success and make you more accountable. Make sure you choose the right accountability partner, it could be the difference between you reaching your goal, or not.

Create a schedule - When it comes to goal setting you've likely got an expected outcome and a deadline, but what's happening in between? A big reason people fail to achieve their goals is that they have no road map to help them reach their destination. If you're really serious about accomplishing your goals, then give yourself a schedule to follow, not just a deadline to race towards.

Keep your goals visible - When goals are written in an unused journal, then stuffed in a drawer, they're often never achieved. It's important to stay connected to your goals and to regularly review them, so keep them somewhere you can see them. Look at your goals every day and stay focused on achieving them.
